The Freeing the Elwha design was commissioned by the Tribe and completed by Tribal Member Roger Fernandes. This print commemorates the removal of the Elwha dam. The artwork includes cultural elements that represent not just the dam removal, but the culture of the Lower Elwha S'Klallam people as well. At the center of the piece is a woman the S'Klallams call "Lady of the Mountain". She is the key character in a legend where she becomes a part of nearby mountain, but promises to return should the people need her. To remove this dam the S'Klallams needed legal and political help, However the cultural imperative to honor the river and our ancestors was of equal importance to carry this struggle to this momentous event. She representrs this acient cultural between us and our ancestors. The Lady is tearing down the dam, releasing the waters and a salmon swims into the breach, symbolic of the culture's return as well. Above her in the sky is Thunderbird, a powerful being who represents the tribe and who drives salmon and whales to the people. Thunderbird reminds us of the powers of nature that provide for us and protect us.
Thuder Bird and Thunder Bolts:
This design was created by Ryan Cameron, an enrolled Makah Tribal Member. The thunderbirds are using thunder bolts are chasing salmon up the river in anticipation of dam removal.
